Stress can cause stomach ulcers. Proton pump inhibitors are used to treat stomach ulcers (omeprazole-Losec, pantoprazole-Pantoloc, esomeprazole-Nexium, dexlansoprazole-Dexilant, lansoprazole-Prevacid, rabeprazole-Pariet). People take one of these medications and can control the symptoms without changing the stress in their lives. The stress is causing them harm that extends beyond their stomach. The ulcer is a red flag that something is wrong. Meditation or yoga are two ways to help people deal with stress. Sometimes, examining life circumstances and the alternative choices can be helpful. This is where a mental health professional such as a social worker, psychologist, or psychotherapist is valuable.
From a pharmacist’s perspective, If the stress is not dealt with, people must take proton pump inhibitors for the rest of their lives. In general, these acid blocking medications are intended to be used short term. One of the many possible consequences of long-term use is Vitamin B12 deficiency. Then a Vitamin B12 supplement is needed. Thus, another prescribing cascade begins.
