How can I make my skin or nails better?

As a pharmacist, I get asked, “How can I make my skin (or nails) better?” At a recent online summit, I heard dermatologist Dr. Jessica Krant say that you can improve hair and nail health with better gut health. She linked psoriasis, hidradentis suppurativa, acanthosis nigricans , skin tags, unwanted facial hair, and acne to obesity She has found that if you lose weight, skin conditions get better. She has also found that rosacea and eczema will improve with a better microbiome, which results from a better diet.

Essentially, her recommendations were to avoid sugar, white flour, processed foods, and compounds that cause Advanced Glycosylation Endproducts (AGEs). AGEs are formed when foods are cooked at high heat (e.g. frying, roasting, barbequing). She recommended anti-inflammatory herbs such as turmeric, cloves, ginger, and garlic. Her Anti-Aging Diet is similar to a whole-food, plant-based diet. Thanks for reading! #lifestylemedicine #seniors #olderadults
